WVSU defeated by Virginia Union, will play again tomorrow in consolation game of HBCU Tip-Off

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- The West Virginia State University men's basketball team was defeated by Virginia Union, 75-49, in the opening round of the Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Monday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-2 overall with the loss while the Panthers jump to 2-1 on the season with the win.

Fifth-year guard Glen Abram was the game's leading scorer with 19 points. Third-year forward Anthony Pittman also scored in double-figures with 12 points and nearly had a double-double with a team-high eight rebounds.

The tone for the game was set early on with both teams operating at a fast pace from the onset. Glen Abram handled the scoring for West Virginia State in the opening five minutes by knocking down a pair of three-point jumpers. The score was tied until Virginia Union made its first three-point bucket just before the media timeout, 9-6.

The score was kept close by WVSU until the Panthers knocked down back-to-back trays around the midway point of the first half. The two shots made from behind the arc by VUU left the Yellow Jackets trailing by nine, 22-13.

The deficit grew to as much as 15 points, 34-19, around the six-minute mark. West Virginia State then spent the remainder of the first half cutting into that deficit. WVSU finished strong with a 14-7 run in the last five minutes that lessened the difference to single-digits, 41-35.

The Yellow Jackets were within four points, 45-41, of the Panthers at the first commercial timeout of the second half. The gap was shrunk to four when Jeremiah Moore hit a turnaround jumper in the paint after Abram dished to Dwaine Jones for a second-chance layup.

The four-point differential ended up being the closest split of the second half as Virginia Union went up by double-digits again three minutes later. The Panthers continued to pull away for the rest of the contest and eventually went up by 20, 67-47, with four-and-a-half minutes to play. The final score turned out to be the largest lead of the game for VUU.

Virginia Union shot 47 percent from the floor compared to 28 percent by West Virginia State.

WVSU will play again tomorrow in the consolation game on the final day of the Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off. The Yellow Jackets will face the loser of the Winston Salem State versus Morehouse game at 2 p.m. on ESPNU.
