Yellow Jackets defeat Morehouse in consolation game of Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- The West Virginia State University men's basketball team defeated Morehouse, 71-66, in the consolation game of the inaugural Chris Paul HBCU Tip-Off on Tuesday afternoon at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The game was a toss-up until the very end when the Yellow Jackets found themselves back in the lead and held on to win it.

West Virginia State improves to 3-2 on the season with the victory while Morehouse drops to 1-3 overall with the defeat.

Third-year forward Anthony Pittman recorded his first double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The other two members of the big three, fifth-year veterans Jeremiah Moore and Glen Abram, also scored in double-digits. Moore posted 18 points while Abram scored 16 points.

West Virginia State scored six unanswered to start the game. Jeremiah Moore made a layup before Glen Abram knocked down a three-point shot and Anthony Pittman converted 1-of-2 free throws.

The lead was held by the Yellow Jackets until the 12-minute mark when Morehouse tied the score at 14-apiece with a bucket from downtown. WVSU then jumped back out front with an 11-5 run over a five-and-a-half minute stretch. Five Yellow Jackets put up points during the run, including Bradlee Lewis who capped the run with a trey. West Virginia State consequently earned a six-point advantage, 27-21, with around six minutes remaining in the first half.

An 8-0 run by the Tigers followed that gave them the lead, 31-29, with two-and-a-half minutes to go until halftime. Moore was sent to the charity stripe not long after and tied up the game with two foul shots, 31-31.The first half ended with two layups from Morehouse, with a three-pointer made by Noah Jordan in between, to leave West Virginia State down by one at the break, 35-34.

The second half started with a two-and-a-half minute scoring drought. Dwaine Jones was the first player to put points on the board with a jumper in the paint that resulted in a lead change to WVSU, 36-35. The lead didn't last for long with the Tigers scoring seven unanswered over the next three-and-a-half minutes to go up by six, 42-36.

The Yellow Jackets battled back to even the score, 47-47, with nine minutes left to play. Lewis completed an old fashioned three-point play to tie up the game. By the five-minute mark of the second half, Morehouse was ahead by six points again, 58-52. The deficit was cut in half shortly thereafter when Abram drained a three-pointer.

With two minutes left in the contest, Pittman tied it up at 61-all with a basket from behind the arc. He then grabbed a defensive board and dished to Abram for a fastbreak layup that returned the lead to the Yellow Jackets.

Abram was sent to the foul line three times while Pittman was sent once in the final minute. All their foul shots were sunk to secure the victory.

West Virginia State shot 81 percent from the free throw line whereas Morehouse only converted 47 percent of its free throws.

The Yellow Jackets begin their conference schedule on Monday, Nov. 29th with a road trip to Concord next. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
