Men's Basketball edged by Concord in overtime, 81-79

ATHENS, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University men's basketball team took Concord to overtime on Monday night but came up short, 81-79, in the first Mountain East Conference contest of the season for the Yellow Jackets.

WVSU drops to 3-3 overall, 0-1 in the MEC with the defeat. Meanwhile, CU jumps to 3-4 on the season, 1-1 in league play with the victory.

Forwards Anthony Pittman and Jeremiah Moore both registered double-doubles with a combination of points and rebounds. Moore did so with a team-leading 18 points and 10 boards while Pittman got there with a game-high 14 rebounds alongside 17 points.

West Virginia State scored all of the first eight points of the game to take an early lead. Moore scored four points while Pittman scored two and assisted on the other bucket. Concord then quickly evened the score with a 10-2 run that tied it with 15-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening half.

From that point forward, there was not much to separate the two squads. The Mountain Lions held the lead for most of the first half, but the Yellow Jackets stayed within one basket of them for the most part. A hook shot by Moore tied it at 20-all with 12 minutes to go then a three-pointer from Devin Perry tied it again at 33-apiece with seven minutes left.

Concord went up by five with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half before a scoring drought ensued. Noah Jordan completed an old-fashioned three-point play to end the drought and cut the deficit to two points, 40-38, before halftime.

The second half bore a striking resemblance to the first half. The Mountain Lions led by a basket or two until Dwaine Jones knocked down a three-point shot to tie it at 54-even at the 13-minute mark. West Virginia State then became the team playing from the front with a 7-0 run that gave the Yellow Jackets a five-point advantage, 63-58, at the seven-minute mark. The score was then tied again after two minutes.

A dunk by Bradlee Lewis and a jumper by Pittman was met with a CU layup before Glen Abram wet a trey to put WVSU back up by five, 70-65, with 1:40 flashing on the scoreboard. The Mountain Lions responded with another layup and hit a clutch three-pointer in the closing seconds to force overtime.

The score was deadlocked through the first two-and-a-half minutes of overtime. Concord's Lual Ruhama then hit back-to-back jumpers in a short span to put pressure on WVSU. In the final minute-and-a-half of overtime, only Moore was able to score on a fastbreak layup.

West Virginia State outrebounded Concord, 48-38, but was unable to hit a high percentage of shots. The Yellow Jackets shot 36.5 percent from the floor and only 17.2 percent from three-point land.

The Yellow Jackets will be back at home for their next game against Frostburg State on Wednesday, Dec. 1st. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
