WVSU wins big against Frostburg thanks to strong second half performance, 103-89

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University men's basketball team trounced Frostburg State, 103-89, on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The game was tight in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets took over in the second half and ran away with it to win comfortably in the end.

WVSU improves to 4-3 overall, 1-1 in the Mountain East Conference with the victory. Meanwhile, the Bobcats drop to 2-6 on the season, 1-2 in the MEC with the defeat.

Sophomore forward Noah Jordan posted a career-high 23 points and was the game's leading scorer. He also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Five other Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures on the night including Ernest Jenkins (16), Jeremiah Moore (13), Bradlee Lewis (13), Glen Abram (12), and Anthony Pittman (11).

The first half was a game of cat-and-mouse between the two squads. Frostburg State led by as many as seven and the Yellow Jackets only held a three point advantage. The Bobcats jumped out to a seven point lead off a Jaylon Johnson free throw at the 15:40 mark of the first half. The Yellow Jackets then strung a Jeremiah Moore layup and a Dwaine Jones jumper together before the first media timeout to cut the Bobcat lead to three.

A Frostburg bucket extended the lead back to five. A layup by Noah Jordan and another Moore jumper shaved the lead back to a single digit, 14-13 with 12:53 to go. The two squads traded baskets back-and-forth going into the second media timeout with Frostburg State holding a 22-20 lead over the hometown squad.

Ernest Jenkins nailed a three to give the Jackets their first lead of the game at the 9:09 mark. The Bobcats would retake the lead under a minute later with a layup but on the ensuing possession Devin Perry would draw a foul and sink both shots from the charity stripe to give the lead back to the Yellow Jackets. Neither team led by more than two during the stretch until Abram hit a trey to give the Jackets a three-point advantage at the 5:56 mark. WVSU would hold a one-point advantage going into the final media timeout of the half.

For most of the final frame of the first half the Yellow Jackets held a three point lead with Jones, Jordan, Moore, and Jenkins all responding to Bobcat buckets. Frostburg State hit a foul shot and a jumper to tie it up at 46-all. Moore hit a foul shot to give the Yellow Jackets their final points of the half, then in the closing moments of the half, Frostburg State hit a jumper to take a one-point advantage into the locker room.

WVSU went on an 8-2 run to start the second half, forcing Frostburg State to burn an early timeout with Moore, Jones, and Jordan all contributing. Pittman, who was held scoreless in the first half, got his first points of the game at the 16:18 mark and hit a second shot just a few seconds later before missing a heat-checker just outside the media timeout. Abram hit just his second trey of the game right before the under-15 media timeout, giving the Jackets a 68-60 lead.

The Yellow Jackets got hot after the media timeout, stroking three of their five long-range shots and seven of their 10 shots during the period. Abram scored eight, Pittman added five and Jordan contributed four going on a 17-7 run prior to the under-10 media timeout. Abram took advantage of the and-one opportunity prior to the timeout and extended the Yellow Jacket lead to 83-67.

Lewis slammed the ball through the hoop at the 7:28 mark and brought the Yellow Jacket faithful to their feet in the Walker Center, extending the WVSU lead to 25, 94-69. The lead would shrink to 20 with just under two minutes to go before Frostburg State waved the white flag and both teams sent subs in with the Bobcats staring down a 103-83 deficit. The Bobcats scored six more for the final margin.

West Virginia State's shooting accuracy was much improved from recent games. The Yellow Jackets shot 53.4 percent from the floor and 39.4 percent from three-point range. In comparison, the Bobcats shot 46.7 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc.

WVSU will hit the road for another MEC clash with Fairmont State on Saturday, Dec. 4th next. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
