ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team was defeated by Davis & Elkins, 93-81, on the road Saturday afternoon.
West Virginia State drops to 9-15 overall, 7-11 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the defeat. Meanwhile, Davis & Elkins jumps to 7-17 on the season, 6-12 in the MEC with the victory.
Freshman guard Alexis Hall registered her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Both Destiny Fields and Payton Shears recorded 11 points, while Kalia Cunningham posted 10 points to make four Yellow Jackets with double figures in scoring.
The Yellow Jackets played well in the first quarter. They hung with the Senators for the opening eight minutes and then burst ahead with an 8-0 run in the last two minutes. West Virginia State led by three points, 22-19, going into the second period.
Davis & Elkins started the second quarter on a 15-3 run that spanned five minutes. When it ceased, D&E was ahead by nine points, 34-25.
The final five minutes of the first half was played evenly with both teams putting up 11 points. Payton Shears knocked down a three-pointer in the closing seconds to cut the deficit to six points, 45-39.
The Senators opened the second half on a 12-0 run that left them with an 18-point advantage, 57-39, after four minutes ticked off the clock.
The Yellow Jackets again battled back in the next five minutes with a 14-5 run. They closed the gap to single digits, 62-53, with the surge. D&E made a couple of buckets in the last minute of the third quarter to take a 13-point lead, 66-53, into the final period.
West Virginia State outscored Davis & Elkins, 28-23, in the last nine minutes of the game. Unfortunately, the late effort was not enough to overcome the deficit from the end of the third period.
The Yellow Jackets will continue their road trip with another MEC clash at Urbana on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
