URBANA, Ohio – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team made the long trek to Urbana on Wednesday night and was defeated, 123-98.
West Virginia State falls to 9-16 overall, 7-12 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the loss. Meanwhile, Urbana improves to 16-9 on the season, 12-7 in the MEC with the win.
Sophomore guard
Charity Shears was the game's leading scorer with 31 points. Fellow sophomore
Chloe Cheresne was close behind with 22 points. Both
Destiny Fields and
Hannah Shriver also reached double digits in scoring with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
The first quarter was a landslide as the Blue Knights went up by 21 points, 32-11, in the opening ten minutes.
The Yellow Jackets played better in the second quarter and put up 20 points to Urbana's 29 points. At halftime, West Virginia State trailed by 30 points, 61-31.
Both teams scored at will in the third quarter. West Virginia State scored 36 points while Urbana posted 40 points to leave the Yellow Jackets with a 34-point deficit, 101-67, going into the fourth quarter.
The Yellow Jackets made up some ground in the final period by outscoring their opponents, 31-22.
Without taking the dismal first period into account, West Virginia State played Urbana tough. The Yellow Jackets were edged by a meager four points, 91-87, in the last three quarters.
West Virginia State will return to Institute for its final home game of the 2019-20 season on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Yellow Jackets will host Notre Dame College at 2 p.m.
