West Virginia State outlasts Davis & Elkins in a true team effort, 85-74

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team defeated Davis & Elkins, 85-74, on the road Saturday afternoon. Six Yellow Jackets posted double figures in scoring to lift West Virginia State to victory.

West Virginia State improves to 17-6 overall, 12-6 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the win. Meanwhile, Davis & Elkins falls to 6-18 on the season, 4-14 in the MEC with the loss.

Six Yellow Jackets scored in double digits in a true team effort. Anthony Pittman and Frank Agyemang led the pack with 18 and 15 points, respectively.  Both Glen Abram and Isaiah Noel recorded 12 points, while Michal Seals and Jeremiah Moore each tallied 11 points.  

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the opening eight minutes of the contest. Glen Abram knocked down three shots from behind the arc during the run to propel WVSU to an early 14-point advantage.

The Senators got themselves back into the game with a 20-15 run over the next eight minutes. With approximately four minutes left to play in the first half, West Virginia State was still in front by nine points, 35-26.

The Yellow Jackets finished off the opening half with a 9-4 run that gave them a 14-point cushion, 44-30, at the break.

Davis & Elkins started to challenge in the second half. After six minutes, the Senators managed to tie the score, 51-51. D&E needed a 21-7 run to reset the game with 14 minutes to go.

West Virginia State then decided to take back control of the game with a 20-8 run in a six-minute span. Anthony Pittman led the charge with a couple of trays. The Yellow Jackets were comfortably in the lead once again, 71-59, after the surge.

The final eight minutes of the contest was virtually a formality as the Yellow Jackets held Davis & Elkins to 15 points while putting up 14 points.

West Virginia State forced 22 turnovers and made 15 steals to keep D&E in check. Comparatively, the Senators forced seven turnovers and made three steals in total.

The Yellow Jackets will continue their road trip with another MEC clash at Urbana on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
