Institute, W.Va – West Virginia State University played host to Fairmont State University in a regionally televised game on AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh match-up Sunday February 24, 2019 at the Walker Convocation Center.

Augustus "Gus" Stone career high in points 28 and Isaiah "Tuss" Noel career high in rebounds 15 were not enough as the Yellow Jackets fell to 9th ranked team in the Atlantic Region Fairmont State University 89-78. State trailed by as many 15 points in the second half, cutting the deficit to three points on two separate occasions, the last coming at 73-70 on two free throws byFrank Agyemang with 4:21 left.

Stone topped his previous best of 26-points against Shepherd on November 17, 2018. The junior went a perfect 11 for 11 at the free throw line. Noel added his 3rd double-double of the season, with 14 points and a career high 15 rebounds. It marked the second straight game for the junior grabbing double digit boards in as many games.  Ernest Jenkins (12 points) and Carmearl Thomas(10 points) rounded out the double figure scorers for the Yellow Jackets.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 12-14 overall and 9-11 in league play, and sixth place tie with Shepherd University. The top six teams earn first round byes in the MEC Tournament, held in Wheeling, W.Va, March 6-10. WVSU next goes on the road at Concord University on Wednesday, February 27, 2019. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
