Yellow Jackets bested by No. 22 Glenville State, 127-91

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team traveled to the Waco Center to square off against No. 22 Glenville State on Saturday afternoon. West Virginia State was unable to keep up with the Pioneers' high-scoring offense and subsequently suffered defeat, 127-91.

Freshman Milla Spann posted a season-high 22 points in the contest with six three-point field goals made. Fellow freshman Destiny Fields finally achieved the double-double numbers that she's come close to in previous games. She registered 11 rebounds, five offensive and six defensive boards, while recording 13 points.

West Virginia State drops to 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the loss. Meanwhile, Glenville State leaps to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the MEC with the win.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the opening period. At the five-minute mark, the score was deadlocked at 8-8. There wasn't much separation between the two sides until the final two minutes of the first quarter. Glenville State then proceeded to go on a 12-3 run to give the Pioneers a 13-point lead going into the second period, 32-19.

Glenville State increased its advantage in the second quarter, going up by as much as 30 points in the closing seconds of the first half. The Yellow Jackets entered the break down by 28 points, 73-45.

While the third quarter was more of the same, West Virginia State showed that it could hang with Glenville State in the final period. The fourth quarter was a 22-22 tie in which the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-2 run with seven minutes left in the contest. During the run, Payton Shears hit a three-point shot that was followed up by two consecutive three-pointers from Abby Faulkner.

West Virginia State was more accurate from three-point range than Glenville State. WVSU shot 42 percent from behind the arc compared to 37 percent by GSC.

The Yellow Jackets return home for another MEC clash versus Concord on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
