INSITUTE, W Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team came up short, 122-122, against Concord on Tuesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. Four Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits in spite of the game's result.
West Virginia State falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the defeat. Meanwhile, Concord jumps to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in league play with the victory.
Freshman guard
Destiny Fields posted a game-high 29 points, going 4-of-8 from the three-point line. She also added a total of 14 rebounds to register a double-double. Sophomore forward
Chloe Cheresne contributed with 21 points and two rebounds. Sophomore guard
Kalia Cunningham was the Yellow Jackets' main distributor with six assists.
The Yellow Jackets got off to a hot start in the first quarter by going 4-of-12 on three-point attempts, which helped them to a 22-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Concord then turned the tables in the second quarter and outscored the Yellow Jackets, 39-30. A late run by Concord gave the Mountain Lions a seven-point advantage, 59-52, going into halftime.
The Mountain Lions carried their momentum over to the third quarter and outscored the Yellow Jackets, 34-26. Concord went up by as much as 14 points in the third period and took a 90-78 lead into the fourth and final quarter.
The Yellow Jackets mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter and ended up outscoring their opponents, 34-32. The full court press deployed by West Virginia State in the final period resulted in the Yellow Jackets being able to cut their deficit to just two points, 95-93, with 6:35 remaining in the contest. The Mountain Lions finished strong, nevertheless, and never relinquished their lead.
Concord scored 80 of its points in the paint, compared to 48 by West Virginia State.
The Yellow Jackets will come back after the Thanksgiving break to take on Frostburg State at home on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
