INSTITUTE, W Va.- The West Virginia State University women's basketball team picked up its second victory of the season against Frostburg State, 94-87, on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets held the lead for nearly 38 minutes of the contest.
West Virginia State improves to 2-4 overall, 1-2 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) with the victory. Frostburg drops to 1-7 on the season, 1-2 in league play with the defeat.
Sophomore forward
Chloe Cheresne led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 24 points and added 10 rebounds to register a double-double. Sophomore guard
Sierra Womack added 11 points by shooting 5-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 from three-point range. Freshman guard
Destiny Fields contributed 12 points, six rebounds and three steals in an all-out performance.
The early stages of the first quarter was a back and forth affair by the two teams. Halfway through the opening period, the Yellow Jackets went on a quick 7-0 run to swing the momentum in their favor. West Virginia State then went on a 12-3 run at the end of the first period that was capped off by a layup from Fields. The bucket secured an 11-point lead, 29-18, for the Yellow Jackets going into the second period.
Frostburg State outscored the West Virginia State, 24-22, in the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets stayed in control of the game, nevertheless, and entered the halftime recess with a 51-42 lead.
West Virginia State then outscored Frostburg State, 23-19, in the third quarter to increase the Yellow Jackets' advantage. The third period was finished off with a layup from
Charity Shears to make the score 74-61 going into the final period.
The WVSU defense went to work in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats attempted to mount a comeback. The Yellow Jackets held their ground by forcing seven turnovers, two of which came in the final four minutes of the contest. West Virginia State never gave up its lead since taking it early in the first quarter.
Turnovers were at the root of the difference between the two sides. West Virginia State recorded 14 steals as a unit and scored 31 points off turnovers. Comparatively, Frostburg State managed seven steals and 11 points off turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets remain at home for another MEC showdown versus Fairmont State on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
