WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team fell to No. 19 Wheeling, 3-0, in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) clash on Saturday afternoon.
Despite two consecutive losses, West Virginia State (14-11, 7-2 MEC) is still third in the league standings. Meanwhile, Wheeling (20-3, 8-0 MEC) maintains its unbeaten streak in league play since joining the MEC in 2013.
Sophomores Gabrielle Thompson and J'Lana Stone were solid in the middle of the net against the nationally-ranked Cardinals. Stone recorded seven kills and two blocks, while Thompson tallied five kills and one block.
The first set was a 25-8 rout by Wheeling. The strongest performance by the Yellow Jackets came in the second set. They hung with the Cardinals for most of it and only lost by seven points, 25-18. The third set was another rout by Wheeling, 25-10.
The Cardinals committed a mere nine attack errors as a team, compared to 21 attack errors by the Yellow Jackets.
West Virginia State stays on the road for a midweek contest at Bluefield State on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The non-conference matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.Â
