WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team was defeated by West Liberty, 3-0, on Friday night. The defeat snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Yellow Jackets and marked their first loss against a Mountain East Conference (MEC) opponent this season.
West Virginia State (14-10, 7-1 MEC) is now tied for second place with Urbana in the MEC standings following the loss. West Liberty (13-11, 5-4 MEC) sits firmly in sixth place in the league standings after the win.
West Virginia State's hitting percentage was far below average at .054 through three sets. West Liberty was much more accurate with their attacks and combined for a .200 hitting percentage.
The Hilltoppers started strong with a 25-20 victory in the first set. They carried that momentum over to the second set and went up 24-14. The Yellow Jackets showed their resolve by scoring seven unanswered points, but WLU was still able to claim the set, 25-21. West Liberty ran away with the third set, 25-16.
Sophomore Grace Martin led all players in the match with 15 digs. Freshman Emily Davis recorded four kills on six total attempts in her two sets played.
The Yellow Jackets play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. against No. 19 Wheeling.
