Pitching, Defense, Timely Hitting Lead Softball to Sweep

The Yellow Jacket softball team took advantage of some outstanding pitching and defense combined with timely hitting to take both ends of a doubleheader from visiting Glenville State Monday.

Emily Thompson and Allyson Burgess combined to throw a four-hit shutout as WVSU took game one 3-0. Madison Rafuson drove in two runs and Brookelyn Hale the other in the win.

The nightcap would prove to be much more dramatic as the Yellow Jackets fell behind 1-0 in the first inning.

After the squads traded four scoreless frames WVSU third baseman Shian Meeks evened the score with a one-out solo blast over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth.

With the pitching and defense holding the Pioneers scoreless Kayleigh Thompson singled to start of the bottom of the eighth as the game stretched to extra innings.

After a strikeout Thompson stole second, her 13th steal of the season in 13 attempts.

Meeks then stepped to the plate with a chance to play the hero once more and the freshman did not disappoint as she drove a double to deep center that allowed Thompson to scurry home with the game-winner.

Amanda McDonald allowed just the one run in six innings of work in the circle and Calli Norton pitched the final two innings to earn the win.

The Yellow Jackets played errorless ball throughout the day.

WVSU next plays host to rival Charleston in a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. Wedensday.
