West Virginia State University senior football player Quinton Gray had quite a season last fall.
The wide receiver caught 80 passes to lead the Yellow Jackets and the Mountain East Conference.
In the season's next to last game against Concord the wide receiver out of Stafford, Va., put together an outstanding performance.
Gray caught touchdown passes of 38, 70, and 15 yards, threw a 33-yard touchdown pass, and recovered a Concord onside kick to seal the victory. He finished that day with 11 receptions for 211 yards and also ran twice for 23 yards.
We caught up with Gray as he prepares for Saturday's 1 p.m. Spring Game.
How did you end up at WVSU?
"It was late in my senior year and I really didn't see any offers then one of the coaches here showed interest, came to my house and told me they were looking for someone who could make a difference.
I came here to try and make that difference."
Â
Have you found college life to be much different than high school?
"It has not really been that much of a change as far as responsibilities. I'm usually very focused on my athletics and school and I'm very involved in my church as well."
Â
How about the football part of college?
"That is different. The biggest difference is the size of the people, especially playing receiver where people are trying to take your head off at every turn. You really have to keep "your head on a swivel" , is what they call it, so you know what is coming and you can protect yourself."
Â
Did you play any other sports when you were younger?
"I played basketball as a little kid and my sophomore year in high school. I ran track as well."
Â
Why did you stick with football?
"Growing up we always played in the yard and I was the smallest person on the field all the time but I was the quickest. That kind of drew my attention and I thought I was kind of good at this. What really stuck with me was I realized catching wasn't something everyone could do."
Â
Do you have any brothers and sisters?
"I am the baby of five. I have one older brother and three sisters. I am the first one to go straight to college and play college sports."
Â
What are your goals this year for school?
"Just to stay focused and stay on track to graduate."
Â
How about your goals on the football field?
"I am really trying to be top in the country and be recognized as one of the best receivers and I have a plan to go to the pros as well."
Â
What do you do in your spare time?
"I just hang out with friends or church."
Â
Do you have any favorite hobbies or talents?
"I pick up new hobbies all the time like I can tumble , I did a back flip coming out before the last game.
I can sing a little bit, play the guitar, the ukulele."
Â
What do you want to do after graduation?
"Most likely play professional football, overseas, NFL, Canadian, it doesn't really matter.
Also, be an entrepreneur, I have two businesses already."
