Institute, W.Va. — West Virginia State University's final football game of the season took a hard hit on Saturday, as Charleston outlasted the Yellow Jackets 38-21 at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. Despite the loss, The Yellow Jackets produced 352 total yards - 202 passing and 150 rushing.
Devin Cox led with 101 rushing yards while
Kaleb Jackson was 18-34 passing with 202 yards.
First Quarter
The Golden Eagles began the scoring with a 53 yard touchdown pass from Matthew Frye to Marquan Herron at 10:42. The Yellow Jackets quickly responded with a 75 yard drive finished by a one yard rush from
Nasean Hill at 4:14 to tie the game. To close the quarter, Charleston kicked a 44 yard field goal taking the lead to 10-7.
Second Quarter
Momentum began to switch early in the second quarter when Nansen Hill had another one yard touchdown at 11:53. Shortly after
Kaleb Jackson completed a pass to Todd Gregory Jr. at 7:16 for another touchdown; taking the Yellow Jackets to a lead of 21-10. However, shortly before half time, the Golden Eagles struck as Ean Hamric completed a pass to Marquan Herron for 41 yards. Closing the half with a score of 21-17.
Third Quarter
At the start of the second half Charleston quickly took over. With a 69 yard drive with Hamric rushing 6 yards for the touch down at 9:42. Soon after, Jaylen Butera completed a 57 yard run and a one yard rush putting Charleston ahead, 31-21 at 4:35.
Fourth Quarter
The Yellow Jackets were unable to gain momentum. A 25 yard touchdown pass to Yves Bosmans from Hamric increased the lead to 38-21 at 1:22, securing Charleston's victory.
The Yellow Jackets close out their season 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Mountain East Conference, concluding with strong individual performances, but a disappointing final result.
