Hines and Summers Heroics Lead Yellow Jackets to Win

Box Score The Yellow Jacket women's basketball team woke up the crowd in the Walker Convocation Center Thursday night with an exciting and dramatic 77-75 win over the visiting University of Virginia at Wise.

"Today we showed a desire to win and for that I am extremely proud of our ladies," Jackets' Head Coach Charles Marshall said. "We still have much more to give."

After a hard fought opening half ended with WVSU up by a single point at 36-35 the Cavaliers edged ahead 44-42 with 7:35 remaining in the third period.

That lead would reach as high as nine points and the visitors would continue to stay in front of the Yellow Jackets for almost the rest of the game.

Almost.

With 54 seconds to play and Wise ahead 75-72 senior Shealyn Shafer, who leads the MEC in blocked shots, blocked a Cavalier layup attempt and grabbed the ball.

After a Wise foul reset the shot clock junior Shea Hines found herself alone just to the right of the foul circle and drained a 3-pointer with 21 seconds showing to tie the score.

The visitors called time out to set up the last play which also allowed the Yellow Jackets to set up their defense.

Hines applied pressure to the ball handler around to top of the key on the Cavaliers end and senior Amiea Summers came from seemingly nowhere to knock the ball away with 4.2 seconds to go.

"We were hoping to get a defensive stop and have enough time to go down to the other end and get a bucket," Summers said of the strategy coming out of the timeout. "Shea was guarding her and as she turned the corner I saw an opportunity to steal the ball,"

Summers raced down the court and hit a driving layup on the right side while being fouled with just 0.2 seconds showing on the clock for the win.

"I saw the time ticking down and had to hurry," Summers said.

It was her only basket of the game.

Hines led all scorers with 27 points followed by Shafer with 17 and Jasmine Davis with 12 for WVSU.

WVSU faces rival University of Charleston at 2 p.m. Saturday when seniors will be honored in the team's final regular season contest.
