West Virginia Wesleyan is winless so far this season but closer inspection shows the Bobcats to be a very dangerous looking 0-2 team.
"That would be a fair assessment," WVSU Head Football Coach
Jon Anderson said. "They are much improved and are playing extremely hard."
With an experienced lineup and new coaching staff Wesleyan has proven to be a tough opponent so far this season.
The Bobcats trailed league power Shepherd just 12-9 at halftime before falling 27-12 on the road in their opener. Last week they fell 31-28 to visiting Glenville State in the closing minutes.
Last season the Yellow Jackets scored 35 second half points to blow open a contest that was tied 17-17 at halftime. Quarterback
Matt Kinnick led the way by throwing for a career best 434 yards as WVSU won 52-31.
For Wesleyan Luke Casey started at quarterback and threw for 329 yards and ran for 84 more to pace the Bobcat attack.
So far this season Casey has been bumped to backup status with junior Ryan Deal starting under center. He has completed 30-59 passes for 395 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Bobcats main weapon on offense has been senior running back Michael Anderson.
A first team All-MEC selection last season when he finished fifth in the league in yards per game Anderson has carried the ball 44 times this season for 241 yards, 157 of those last week against Glenville State.
Last year WVSU held Anderson to just 29 yards on the ground.
Anderson also leads Wesleyan in number of pass receptions catching eight for just 17 yards while Marcus Smith is the squad's most dangerous wideout with seven catches for 150 yards.
"They have some individual players we have to watch out for," Anderson said.
The Yellow Jackets will be looking to build on last week's marathon win at Urbana to pick up some momentum heading into the middle of their schedule.
"We improved dramatically from week one to week two in all three phases of the game," Anderson said. "Our goal this week is to improve once again."
Kinnick is back behind center for WVSU and has completed 32-51 passes so far for 471 yards. He was forced to sit out a good part of last week's game due to a minor injury but is expected to return this week.
Juawan Etheredge is coming off a strong outing carrying the ball after rushing for 132 yards on 29 carries.
Game time Saturday is 1 p.m. at Dickerson Stadium.
