Box Score You will need to forgive members of the WVSU football team if they sleep in a little bit Sunday.
They have had a rough, and long, couple of days.
But when all was said and done Saturday the Yellow Jackets had accomplished their mission with a 37-24 win at Urbana.
"A lot of things happened that were out of our control," WVSU Head Football Coach
Jon Anderson said. "I am proud of how this team did."
The weekend did not get off to a good start with the bus that was supposed to take the team on the three hour trip to Urbana was delayed, That meant the Yellow Jackets departed Institute much later than originally planned.
But the Jackets handled that well as the defense held the Blue Knights in check in the opening quarter until the offense gave WVSU a 7-0 lead with 2:26 to play in the period on a 37-yard pass from
Matt Kinnick to A.J. Barrette.
Then the defense took over with a touchdown of its own on a
Kyle Alexander 46-yard interception return just a minute later.
Urbana rallied to cut the margin to 14-10 at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets took to the ground after the break with
Juawan Etheredge scoring twice on short runs to push the lead back up to 28-10.
The Blue Knighs responded again with a score but WVSU countered with a 32-yard scroing play from
Austin Hensley to
Akil Washington with 59 seconds to go in the third quarter.
Hensley had come in at quarterback when Kinnick was unable to continue due to an injury.
"Austin came in and we didn't miss a beat," Anderson said. "He did an excellent job."
The former Hurricane High star completed 11-of-12 passes for 194 yards with the one touchdown and no interceptions in his first action in a West Virginia State uniform,
Shortly after that Mother Nature took control. Weather conditions, including lightning, forced officials to suspend play for what would end up being four hours and five minutes.
Basically trapped in their lockerroom the Yellow Jackets did their best to stay focused.
"We got them off their feet and re-hydrated them," Anderson said. "It was really trying."
Time became a factor as the Urbana field does not have lights and darkness was approaching.
Once play did resume though the Yellw Jackets somehow managed to maintain the momentum they had built up.
"It really showed a lot of maturity by our team," Anderson said. "They went out there after the delay and took control."
The Jackets kept the ball mainly on the ground and were very successful at both grinding out yardage and running time off the clock.
Etheredge wound up with 132 yards on 29 carries.
The Yellow Jackets return home for a 1 p.m. Saturday matchup against West Virgi9nia Wesleyan.
