The WVSU softball squad opens a stretch of six games against three Mountain East Conference Southern Division rivals over a five day period today when the Yellow Jackets host Concord in doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
Saturday the Jackets host Glenville State followed by a Sunday meeting with division leader West Virginia Wesleyan.
Both weekend doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets will be looking for some payback today as they dropped a pair of game to the Mountain Lions in Athens last week by scores of 4-3 and 3-0.
WVSU starts the day with an 18-12 overall record and 3-5 conference mark. Concord comes in at 16-12 and 5-5.
The squads rank third and fourth in the MEC in batting average with the Jackets hitting .310 and the Mountain Lions right behind them at .309.
Even though the Concord hurlers came up with some strong performances in the teams' last meeting WVSU's staff has actually had a better season on the whole with a 2.81 earned run average compared to the Mountain Lions' 3.86.
The squads feature two of the top hitters in the league in Concord's leadoff hitter Alayna Furr and the Yellow Jackets'
Sydney Kaplan.
Furr is hitting .430, third in the MEC, while Kaplan is fourth at .426.
Kaplan has put up some impressive power numbers though from her number three spot in the order with six home runs nd 23 runs batted in.
A couple of freshmen are playing an important role in the Yellow Jackets' offensive production this year.
Leadoff hitter
Brookelyn Hale is batting .361 and catcher
Brittany Allison .355.
Allyson Burgess is leading the Jackets' effort in the circle with a 1.74 earned run average and 5-2 record.
Sophomore
Micca Mirabella is a threat on the base paths for WVSU with a conference best 15 stolen bases on the season.
Glenville State is currently 9-20 overall and 4-6 in MEC action.
West Virginia Wesleyan stands at 27-3 and 9-1 on the season. The Bobcats dominate the league pitching statistics with a team ERA of 1.06 and 174 strikeouts in 185 innings pitched.
