West Virginia State Falls in doubleheader at Fairmont State,

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The West Virginia State softball team dropped both games of their Mountain East Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Fairmont State. The Falcons took game one 11-3 before winning 9-2 in the second game.

WVSU is now 23-25 on the season, and 12-16 in MEC play. Fairmont State improves to 33-10 this season, and 21-4 in MEC action.

In the first game, Clarke Moore started things for the Yellow Jackets with a solo home run in the top of the first. After Fairmont State scored three runs in the bottom of the first, WVSU added a pair in the second on an RBI double from Baylee Smith and a double from Sydney Shamblin that tied the game at three. The Falcons then scored eight runs to take the 11-3 win.

Moore finished the game 1-for-3, one of five Yellow Jackets to record hits. Avery Contreras, Smith and Moore all had RBI for WVSU.

In the second game, the Falcons controlled from the start, taking an early 2-0 lead in the first before pulling away in part due to a four-run fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Fairmont State had runners on the corners, but WVSU was able to record three straight outs to escape the inning. WVSU broke through in the sixth, as Cassidy Cummings hit a two-out single, eventually scoring on an RBI double by Emily Bechtel. The next batter, Autumn Hall reached base on a fielding error, allowing Bechtel to score to bring WVSU to within 7-2.

The Falcons scored two more in the sixth then held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the seventh. Cummings finished 2-for-3, with an RBI. Shamblin also went 2-for-3 on the game.

WVSU will close the regular season Friday when they face Frostburg State. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
