Softball Splits Opening Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The WVSU softball headed south to open its season Friday facing Belmont Abbey College just outside of Charlotte.

While the Yellow Jackets did not exactly find warm weather, the temperature in Charlotte only reached 40 degrees Friday, their bats were pleny hot in the early going.

WVSU took the opening game 4-0. Summer Sword drove in a run in the third, freshman Nichole Brown drove in Dee Dee Loftis and Sydney Kaplan (left) with a two out single in the fourth, and freshman Brookelyn Hale knocked in the game's final run when her single drove in Kaplan in the fifth.

Sophomore Allyson Burgess (right) allowed the Crusaders just three hits and did not issue a walk in going the distance.

The Yellow Jacket bats remained hot going onto game two as WVSU (1-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings led by Kaplan's three-run home run.

Belmont Abbey's bats came alive though and the hosts (3-3) rallied to take a 9-6 decision.

The Jackets stay in the Charlotte area Saturday to face Johnson C. Smith in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. with the temperature expected to rise into the mid-50's.
