Box Score The West Virginia State women's basketball team stayed within a 3-point bucket of first place Saturday with a 111-98 win over visiting Urbana.
The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in Mountain East Conference play, trailing only 4-0 Wheeling Jesuit.
The lone conference loss for the Yellow Jacket women this season was a 94-91 decision at the University of Virginia at Wise.
Saturday Shae Hines hit for a game high 29 points for WVSU with
Tatyana Reynolds adding 22,
Jasmine Davis 16,
Shealyn Shafer 13, and
Amiea Summers 10 as the Jackets turned in their best shooting performance of the season.
The Jackets broke open an 11-10 game with a 10-2 run midway through the first quarter to take a 21-12 advantage and led 33-31 after one period of play. Both squads were hot in the early going with WVSU hitting 52.2 percent and the Blue Knights a scorching 68.4 percent.
The Yellow Jackets stretched that margin to 59-50 at halftime.
WVSU gradually stretched the lead to 91-76 after three periods. It would go as high as 26 on a pair of
Jordan Miller free throws with 6:39 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets cruised the rest of the way.
The Jackets finished the game hitting 55.6 percent from the floor, beating their previous best of 45.5 percent set on Thursday.
