Jackets Finish Out Gridiron Season on High Note

Box Score All season, no matter what they faced, West Virginia State football coach Jon Anderson steadfastly maintained that the Yellow Jackets were exhibiting good attitudes and working hard week in and week out.

The players believed in their coaches, believed in the system, and believed in themselves.

The last two weeks Coach Anderson's assertion surely rang true and the player's saw that faith pay off in the form of wins.

After capturing a 52-45 shootout win over Concord last week in the squad's final home game the Yellow Jackets wrapped up their season with a 37-30 win on the road at West Liberty Saturday.

"It was a good team win," Anderson said. "The offense scored consistently throughout the game."

WVSU scored first on a 16-yard pass from Matt Kinnick to Quinton Gray and never trailed.

Kinnick threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns as he completed 30-of-38 attempts and  Gray caught 11 passes for 122 yards.

"Matt Kinnick played a very complete game and stood out along with Gray," Anderson said. "The special teams, especially the punt team, were able to turnover the field position."

Then there was the defense.

Last year the Hilltoppers put together a game-winning drive in the final minutes to narrowly defeat the Yellow Jackets.

There would not be a repeat of that performance Saturday.

"The defense played lights out in the fourth quarter," said Anderson. "It limited a very good West Liberty offense to a punt, a fumble, and a turnover on downs on its last three possessions."

The Hilltoppers' prolific quarterback Dakota Conwell had been a thorn in the Yellow Jackets' side the last couple of years, he ran for 134 yards against WVSU in last season's meeting in Institute, but Saturday the Yellow Jacket defense limited him to -4 yards rushing.

The defense added an exclamation point by forcing the Hilltoppers into four consecutive incomplete passes on their final possession.

After a 1-8 start the Yellow Jackets finish with a 3-8 mark and built some positive momentum going into the offseason.

"Our 12 seniors played their last game for us and leave a win streak as their parting gift," Anderson said. "I'm very proud of this team and coaching staff for being resilient and persistent."

"It was a solid finish to the season."

Juawan Etheredge ran for 76 yards on 20 carries and found the end zone twice and Tyrell Henderson pulled in seven passes for 150 yards.
