The Yellow Jackets hosted a nationally ranked opponent at Dickerson Stadium for the second time in three weeks Saturday.
This time WVSU welcomed in the #18 Braves from University of North Carolina Pembroke for a non-conference game.
It did not take long for both teams to get on the board.
Braves started the game off with a bang as Tra Chandler took an end around dump off pass for a 45-yard touchdown from quarterback Patrick O'Brien.
The Yellow Jackets responded on the ensuing possession as the offensive line created a huge opening for running backÂ
Dionta Brown who took the handoff and burst through the hole for a 65-yard touchdown to tie the score at 7-7 just over five minutes into the contest.
WVSU fans would have a long wait though for another score to celebrate as the visitors would slowly pull away for a 44-14 win to improve to 8-1 on the season.
The Braves responded to Brown's scamper by immediately moving back into the lead on a 51-yard strike from O'Brien to Quay Threat.
After that the teams traded three and outs for the remainder of the first quarter.
Pembroke added a 6-yard touchdown run from Rontonio Stanley and a 58-yard field goal from Matt Davis to take a 24-7 lead into the half.
The Yellow Jackets defense stiffened in the second half limiting the Braves to only one offensive touchdown.
Brown played a big role in the final WVSU score picking up three huge first downs on a drive that would eventually lead the way for a
Matt Kinnick quarterback
keeper into the endzone from 3-yards out with 9:03 to play.
Brown ended the game with a career high 148 yards on just 16 carries. Wide receiver
Quinton Gray had six catches for 83 yard while Kinnick was 14-27 for 177 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball the Yellow Jackets were led by junior linebacker
Dennis Gardeck,with a total of 10 tackles.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next week at home for Senior Day against Mountain East Conference foe Concord.
