Jacket Women Upset #17 West Liberty 99-90

Box Score
The WVSU women's basketball team had shown flashes of potential all season.

Saturday the Yellow Jackets finally put everything together to record a 99-90 upset of visiting #17 West Liberty.

"It was a great win, a good, solid, team effort," WVSU Head Coach David Smith said. "We played hard for 40 minutes."

The Hilltoppers (17-3 overall, 13-2 MEC) held a 67-66 advantage entering the fourth quarter but WVSU quickly moved into the lead on a Shea Hines layup just 13 second into the final period.

The Jackets (10-10, 7-7) would never trail again with their lead reaching 12 points midway through the period.

West Liberty rallied to pull to within three at 93-90 with 46 seconds remaining but the Yellow Jackets converted their free throw opportunities in the closing seconds and played strong defense to pick up the victory.

Freshman Laura Szorenyi led the way with 30 points and nine rebounds, Deyahhna Styles (right) added 18, with Hines and Trina Current contributed 16.

"In the second half Laura just took over for about seven minutes," Smith said. "Trina Current came off the bench and played great,"

WVSU outplayed the visitors in most areas hitting 53.8 percent from the floor to 37.8 by the Hilltoppers while out-rebounding the visitors 49-34.

"At West Liberty they out-rebounded us by 25," Smith said. "So that made a big difference."

Next up the Yellow Jackets host Urbana at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
