Box Score Midway through the third quarter of Saturday's 52-31 win at West Virginia Wesleyan the Yellow Jackets decided they had had enough of the see-saw they had played on for the previous six quarters.
Kelvit Barrett smashed through the line from the one yard line with 6:03 remaining in the third period to pull WVSU into a 24-24 tie with the host Bobcats. It was the second tie of the game and came after four lead changes.
But after dropping a contest very similar to that on a last second play seven days ago the Yellow Jackets (2-1) Â were determined to make a change.
So they not only jumped off that back-and-forth, up-and-down see-saw of constant lead changes and ran, actually sprinted, away from Wesleyan.
On their next possession Matt Kinnick hit Tyrell Henderson with a 48-yard bomb to give WVSU a 31-24 lead.
A two-yard dive by Tyrone Barber made it 38-24 a few minutes later.
"In the first half we had some miscues," WVSU Head Coach Jon Anderson said. "We played really well in the second half though, and did some good things in all phases of the game."
The Jackets' Wesley Sackey-Rush then came up the squad's third interception of the day at the Wesleyan 20 and ran it back to the seven.
After two Barrett carries the Yellow Jackets were up 45-24 and had scored 28 unanswered points to take control.
"That's what teams that win football games do," Anderson said.
Kinnick threw for a career high 434 yards good for three touchdowns. He has yet to throw an interception this season.
The Jacket defense forced five turnovers, four coming on interceptions.
"When this team is clicking it can be pretty good," Anderson said. "The guys responded really well."
The Jackets scored first on a 21 yard field goal by Anthony Herrera five minutes into the game after an interception by Stevin Gomez.
The Bobcats answered with back-to-back touchdowns to move in front 14-3.
WVSU countered with back-to-back Kinnick touchdown passes. The first was four yards to Kyle Garretson and the second 74 yards to Josh Caiquo for a 17-14 lead.
The teams headed into halftime tied at 17-17 after Wesleyan hit a 22-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining.
The Bobcats took a 24-17 lead at the 9:34 mark of the third quarter and then it was almost all Yellow Jackets after that.
Wesleyan scored one last time on a 55-yard pass with 2:44 to play but the Yellow Jackets erased any glimmer of hope the Bobcats were holding onto by recovering the ensuing onside kick and adding one more touchdown on a 25-yard run by Barrett with 2:11 to play.
The Yellow Jackets host the University of Charleston next Saturday at 1 p.m.
