Box Score Saying the WVSU women's basketball team played it best game of the season Monday night would be an understatement.
Beginning with the second quarter, they trailed 19-17 after the first, the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-1 MEC) looked like a different team from their last game just two days ago in rolling to a convincing 86-60 win over visiting University of Virginia at Wise.
The Jackets came into the contest shooting 35% from the floor.
They 63% in the first half and 56.1% for the game Monday.
Also Monday the Yellow Jackets sank 17 of 20 free throw attempts, 85%.
They began the contest hitting only 64%.
WVSU was being out rebounded by and average of over six per game after four games.
They beat the Cavaliers (2-1, 1-1) on the boards 38-30.
The Jackets were averaging 8.8 assists a contest but had 17 Monday.
In other words the women's team had a very good night.
A total of five players ended up in double figures.
Shae Hines and
Alexus Hobbs led the scoring with 15 points each,
Shealyn Shafer added 13,
Laura Szorenyi 11, and
Ashley Current 10.
Deyahnna Styles and
Rachel Ward were right behind with nine and eight respectively.
Shafer led a likewise balanced rebounding effort with eight while Styles dished out seven assists.
WVSU outscored UVa-Wise 30-8 in the second period to take a 47-27 lead into halftime and never let the lead reach single digits in the second half.
Sunday the Jackets travel to Southern Indiana for a 2 p.m. contest.
Their next home game is not until Sunday, December 20 when they host Winston-Salem at 2 p.m.
