Matt Kinnick threw for 406 yards but the Fairmont State defense turned back the Yellow Jackets time and again in the red zone to come away with a 24-12 win on a sunny and warm Saturday afternoon at Dickerson Stadium.
"What it comes down to for us is missed opportunities," WVSU Head Coach
Jon Anderson said. "We moved the ball up and down the field at times then shot ourselves in the foot."
The Yellow Jackets piled up 457 yards of total offense but saw five drives inside the Fairmont 22 yard line end without any points going on the board.
"That's an area we need to improve on," Anderson said. "It comes down to executing and staying focused."
The Falcons took a 7-0 lead on a 41-yard pass play early in the second quarter. WVSU responded five minutes later on a 7-yard keeper by Kinnick.
A missed extra point left Fairmont in the lead 7-6 going into halftime.
The Falcons widened their advantage to 14-6 late in the third period but Kinnick answered by hitting Josh Caiquo from 14-yards out. The two-point attempt came up short leaving the score 14-12.
Fairmont added a field goal late in the third period and then added the game's final touchdown on a 15-yard pass play with 9:46 to play.
"We weren't outmatched," Anderson said. "We're showing signs of improvement but we just have to get all three phases firing at the same time."
Last season the Falcons won 56-3 at home as WVSU totaled 190 yards of offense to Fairmont State's 414.
