The Yellow Jackets have the opportunity to play the spoiler in a big way this weekend when #17 Shepherd comes to town.
The Rams were favored to win the Mountain East when the season started but a 35-34 loss at Notre Dame a couple of weeks ago has them chasing undefeated Concord in the standings.
Shepherd has to beat WVSU to set up a showdown with the Mountain Lions next week in Shepherdstown for the league title and most likely a spot in postseason play.
A loss to the Yellow Jackets would leave the Rams playing for second place.
It will not be an easy task for the Jackets as Shepherd ranks first nationally in rushing defense (42.8 yards per game allowed) and second in total defense (210.6).
The 11.4 points per game the Rams are allowing on average is also the second best nationally.
In all Shepherd ranks first or second in seven categories, mainly defensive in nature.
Redshirt freshman linebacker James Gupton leads the Rams with 56 tackles followed by sophomore linebacker Octavius Thomas with 40.
They have sacked opposing quarterbacks 24 times with junior defensive end Shaneil Jenkins leading the squad with 7.5 sacks.
Sophomore quarterback Jeff Ziemba is second in the conference in passing efficiency and has thrown for 13 touchdowns but had only one pass intercepted.
A quartet of running backs share the action with Jabre Lolley leading the was averaging 71.3 yards a game. He is followed by Allen Cross (52 ypg.), Malik Harleston (47.8), and Trenton Cannon (36).
The balanced attack has picked up 1,524 yards on the ground and 1,809 through the air.
Shepherd is averaging 42.3 points a contest.
After losing three of their first four meetings with the Yellow Jackets the Rams have won 33 straight in the series. The last WVSU win was on November 15, 1980 by a score of 12-7.
