Box Score The WVSU women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a narrow 78-77 loss to visiting Chowan in the first game of the MEC-CIAA Challenge Friday evening.
The Yellow Jackets seemingly broke open a close game by closing out the first half on an 11-1 run to take a 48-38 lead into the break on 60% first half shooting. After WVSU widened the lead just after halftime the Hawks' full court pressure began to wear on the Jackets forcing them into 17 turnovers in the second half.
A 13-2 run by Chowan midway through the half cut into the Yellow Jacket lead and the Hawks chipped away from there until the game was tied with 6:48 to play. A 3-point play by senior Lexi Carson gave WVSU its last lead at 75-73 with 1:42 remaining. The visitors hit what proved to be the game-winner with 11 seconds left.
India Taste and Carson led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points each while seniors Asia-Bryanne Greenleaf and Jordan Brock each pulled down 10 rebounds.
The University of Charleston defeated Johnson C. Smith 76-57 in the nightcap.
