The WVSU football team gave visiting defending conference champion Concord all the Mountain Lions could handle Saturday afternoon but a final drive in the closing minutes came up just a few yards short as the Yellow Jackets fell 23-16.

Ricky Phillips threw for 262 yards and a touchdown to pace the attack but his scramble on fourth and 20 came up 4 yards short with 1:57 to play.

The Yellow Jackets had scored first by taking the opening kickoff and driving 75 yards with Phillips hitting
Keionn Garrett with a 22-yard scoring strike for a 7-0 lead.
Concord tied the score late in the first period and then took a 14-7 lead into halftime on a 28-yard pass with 15 seconds to play in the first half.
The Mountain Lions converted a blocked point after attempt into two points and then retook the lead late in the third quarter on a 44-yard pass play.
Aubura Taylor ran for 52 yards for WVSU while Josh Johnson caught eight passes for 93 yards and Shannin Bennefield hauled in seven for 74 yards.
