Football Falls in Overtime

Loses 30-23 to Glenville State

DIsappointment fell heavily on the Yellow Jackets again Saturday.

An early lead slipped away, a late opportunity to pull ahead went awry, and visiting Glenville State defeated WVSU 30-23 in overtime in football action. 

Ricky Phillips hit Nicholas Ortiz with a 2-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and the Yellow Jacket defense made it standup as WVSU took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

A David Wissler field goal and another scoring strike from Phillips to Ortiz, this time from 20-yards out, gave the Jackets a 16-3 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Suddenly what had been a defensive struggle turned into a track meet up and down the field.

The Pioneers scored on their first two possessions, driving 55 and 85 yards to take a 17-16 lead.

After the second Glenville score WVSU responded in the form of a 66-yard scoring strike from Phillips to Joshua Johnson (above) down the vistors sideline to retake the lead 23-17.

The Pioneers came back again to knot the tally at 23-23 and the Yellow Jackets burst through the line and blocked the extra point to kjeep it that way.

The Jackets had a chance to move back in front but a 38 yard field goal attempt with 2:12 to play was blocked setting up overtime.

Glenville had possession first and scored in four plays.

This time the Yellow Jackets could not counter as Phillips' pass attempt on fourth and seven fell incomplete.

State falls to 1-5 on the season while Glenville moves to 4-3.
