Paul Smith enters his third year on the coaching staff at West Virginia State University in 2019. He currently serves as the Special Teams Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator and Linebackers Coach.
Smith joined the WVSU football staff in 2017 after spending 13 years as a defensive coordinator at various schools.
He has experience working with every defensive position and has worked in several different types of defensive schemes. Smith also has seven years of experience as a special teams coordinator and has coached every aspect of those units.
Throughout his collegiate coaching career, Smith held the positions of recruiting coordinator, academic coordinator, and strength and conditioning coach.

Smith graduated from Union College (Ky.) in 1996 and received his Master's degree from Tiffin University in 2000.

He previously coached at Union College, Chowan, Hiram, Tiffin, and Urbana.

While at Tiffin, Smith was responsible for recruiting the team's 2008 Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Most Valuable Players as well as a wide receiver who was named an All-American that same season.

He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is a former participant in the AFCA Professional Development Series.
Smith is married to his lovely wife, Melissa, and they have four beautiful children together:Â Haleigh, Hanna, Ryder, and River.
