CHARLESTON – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team scored a second-half equalizer Sunday night to earn a 2-2 tie against rival University of Charleston. WVSU moves to 1-2-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in Mountain East Conference play, while UC stands at 1-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in MEC action.
The Yellow Jackets registered their first shot of the night in the 14th minute on a high attempt from
Cali Questel.
Celina Seggelmann recorded her first save a minute later to keep the Golden Eagles off the board.
WVSU turned up the pressure in the 34th minute as
Leila Karam generated a shot, with Questel scoring a short time later, going into the lower right corner to give WVSU a 1-0 lead. Questel had another opportunity just before halftime, but her attempt was stopped by the UC goalkeeper before a final Golden Eagles shot sailed high.
UC opened the second half with an early shot on goal that Seggelmann turned away. The Golden Eagles broke through in the 51st minute to tie the match at 1-1 before taking a 2-1 lead seven minutes later off a double-assisted goal.
Mary Kahraman forced a save in the 65th minute before
Sara París Fílter leveled the match three minutes later, scoring off a free kick to make it 2-2 with just over 23 minutes remaining. Questel kept the pressure on with two shots over the next three minutes, but wasn't able to get either shot on goal. UC generated a pair of scoring chances down the stretch, resulting in a save from Seggelmann and a blocked shot that led to a Golden Eagles corner kick.
The Yellow Jackets had a final scoring chance in the last two minutes as
Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz put a shot on target off a breakaway that was saved. A late WVSU free kick yielded no additional chances as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Both teams finished with 15 total shots, with WVSU holding a 6-5 advantage in shots on target. The Yellow Jackets also earned seven corner kicks on the night. Seggelmann finished with three saves in goal.
WVSU returns to Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium Wednesday night to host Concord University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
