INSTITUTE – The West Virginia State University athletic department recorded a 3.11 overall GPA during the spring 2026 semester, the 16th consecutive semester that WVSU student-athletes have achieved a department GPA of 3.0 or higher. WVSU also had 180 student-athletes named Dr. John L. Fuller Sr. Scholar-Athletes.
The Yellow Jackets had 71% of student-athletes record a GPA above 3.0 this semester, with 30 student-athletes recording a 4.0 GPA. Nine athletic programs recorded a GPA above a 3.0, including women's tennis, which has a department-leading 3.6 GPA. Other 3.0 teams include acrobatics & tumbling, baseball, men's basketball, men's golf, men's tennis, softball, volleyball and women's soccer.
Additionally, West Virginia State had 180 student-athletes be named Dr. John. L Fuller Sr. Scholar-Athletes. Named after Dr. John L. Fuller Sr., who served West Virginia State in a variety of roles during a career that spanned more than 40 years, this honor is given to student-athletes who finish the semester with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
