West Virginia State splits home doubleheader with Davis & Elkins

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State softball team picked up a doubleheader split Monday afternoon, taking the first game 8-0 from Davis & Elkins before dropping the second game of the doubleheader.

WVSU is now 23-23 on the season, and 12-14 in MEC action. The Senators are now 15-35 overall, with a 10-16 mark in Mountain East Conference action.

Cassidy Cummings hit a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth, eventually scoring on a Senators throwing error, giving WVSU the 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets added six runs in the fifth, including a two-RBI double down the left field line from Autumn Hall, as well as a pair of walks and a hit by pitch that made it a 6-0 lead. Clarke Moore turned out to be the hero, hitting a walk-off double to left, giving WVSU the 8-0 run rule win.

Gianna Sloan-Lebron was 3-for-4, while Hall had two RBI on the game. Adrianna Green threw a complete game, allowing just two hits and no runs with three strikeouts.

In the second game, the Senators scored nine runs in their first three innings, including a five-run third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Baylee Smith hit a one-out single, advancing to third before scoring when Hall was hit by a pitch. The next batter was Moore, who singled into right field, bringing Avery Contreras in to score and bringing the Yellow Jackets to within 10-2. After the Senators were able to escape the inning, they added two more runs in the fifth to take the 12-2 win.

Moore and Smith both had two hits in the second game, with Hall and Moore each picking up an RBI.

The Yellow Jackets will close the regular season on the road, when they face Fairmont State and Frostburg State. The action starts with a doubleheader Thursday at Fairmont, with first pitch of game one set for 12:30 p.m.
