WVSU sweeps rival UC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over local rivals University of Charleston Thursday afternoon. It is the first time WVSU has beaten UC since April 22, 2021, and the first doubleheader sweep over the Golden Eagles since April 18, 2018.

WVSU took the first game 2-1, a pitcher's duel that needed 10 innings to resolve. The Golden Eagles scored the first run in the top of the 10th, with State responding in the bottom of the frame. Brooke Christian hit a two-out single to right field, allowing Baylee Smith to score, tying the game at one. After Christian advanced to second on a wild pitch, Autumn Hall worked a 10-pitch at bat, ending things with a game-winning single down the right field line, with Christian scoring the walk-off run for the Yellow Jackets.

Adrianna Green took the win for WVSU, improving to 4-7 on the season. She threw all 10 innings, allowing just the one run on four hits while recording six strikeouts. Four different Yellow Jackets had hits, including Christian (1-for-1, 1 RBI) and Hall (1-for-4, 1 RBI) with Avery Contreras and Cassidy Cummings also recording hits.

In the second game, WVSU took control early, scoring four runs on four hits in the second inning, along with one UC error. Contreras, Shamblin, Hall and Clarke Moore all had RBI during the inning, with Moore and Shamblin hitting sacrifice flies. UC scored one in the sixth, but WVSU added two in the bottom of the frame on an Olivia Bell double to right center field that brought two runs in to score. The Golden Eagles threatened in the seventh, getting runners to second and third before the Yellow Jackets escaped with no runs scoring.

Kaleigh Murphy took the win for the Yellow Jackets, throwing all seven innings, allowing two unearned runs with a pair of strikeouts. Gianna Sloan-Lebron was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Hall was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Olivia Bell also had a two-hit game for the Yellow Jackets.

West Virginia State will continue their homestand this weekend, hosting Davis & Elkins on Saturday afternoon before facing West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon for Senior Day.
