INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State turned in a strong all-around performance with multiple event wins, personal bests, and nationally ranked marks, highlighted by standout efforts on both the track and in the field.
On the men's side, West Virginia State University was led by freshman Luis Castriota, who won the 100 meters in 10.66 seconds and followed with a runner-up finish in the 200 meters (21.90). Malik Kelsic added a third-place finish in the 100, while Day'Vonne Singleton contributed across multiple events, including a second-place finish in the 400 meters and running a leg on the first-place 4x100 relay team (41.53). The field events saw Leotis McNeil II deliver a standout performance with a second-place finish in the triple jump, recording a mark that ranked among the top in both HBCU and Division II this season. Sergio Rose Jr. also added points in multiple events, including the long jump and 400-meter hurdles. Overall, the Yellow Jackets showed depth with several personal bests and scoring finishes across sprints, hurdles, relays, and jumps.
The women's team was equally impressive, highlighted by Jayla Woods capturing the 200-meter title (25.41) and Amia DenMark winning the 400-meter hurdles with a nationally ranked time. Danielle Perez contributed heavily with top-three finishes in both the 200 and 400 meters, while Kennedi Green placed second in the 800 meters with a personal-best performance that also ranked among top HBCU marks this season. In the field, Raina Massey posted a strong showing in the hammer throw with a personal best, and Gisele Abascal added points in the 1500 meters. The Yellow Jackets combined event wins with multiple season-best and personal-best performances, signaling continued progress as the outdoor season moves forward.
