INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State battled through doubleheader Sunday, splitting with Davis & Elkins on the road. After a heartbreaking walk-off loss in the opener, the Yellow Jackets responded with timely hitting and enough late pitching to earn a win in Game 2.
In Game 1, WVSU rallied in dramatic fashion in the seventh inning but came up just short in a 3-2 loss. Trailing 2-0 entering the final frame, the Yellow Jackets finally broke through when
Cassidy Cummings doubled and
Emily Bechtel singled to put runners in scoring position.
Avery Contreras delivered the big swing of the day, lining a two-run single to right to tie the game.
Adrianna Green kept WVSU within striking distance all afternoon, tossing 6.2 solid innings while allowing three runs on seven hits. But after Davis & Elkins answered with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, the Yellow Jackets were left with a tough one-run defeat.
The Yellow Jackets bounced back in Game 2 with a 7-6 victory, using a four-run fourth inning to seize control and salvage the split. WVSU struck first in the opening inning on
Clarke Moore's RBI single, then answered after falling behind with its biggest offensive burst of the day.
Sydney Shamblin tied the game with an RBI double before Moore and
Cassidy Cummings each drove in key runs to cap the rally.
Emily Bechtel added the decisive insurance with a solo home run in the sixth, while
Autumn Hall earned the win after allowing just three runs — two earned — over six innings. Davis & Elkins made things interesting with a three-run homer in the seventh, but WVSU held on to secure the road win.
You can find the Yellow Jackets in Salem Saturday, April 18 for their next doubleheader.
