INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State dropped both ends of a Sunday doubleheader to Frostburg State at Cal Bailey Field, but the Yellow Jackets showed flashes offensively in each game despite being unable to overcome early deficits.
Frostburg State took control early in Game 1, using a three-run first inning and another three-run burst in the third to build separation on the way to a 10-4 victory. West Virginia State answered with solo home runs from
Aidan Paulsen and
Ethyn Barnitz and stayed within striking distance through the middle innings, cutting the deficit to 7-3 after four. However, Frostburg added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to pull away. Paulsen finished with two hits and an RBI, while Barnitz added a two-run effort at the plate. The Yellow Jackets collected seven hits but couldn't match Frostburg's power output, which included three home runs.
In Game 2, West Virginia State tightened things up and remained competitive throughout, but Frostburg again capitalized on key moments to secure a 5-2 win. The Yellow Jackets were limited early before breaking through in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by an RBI single from
Angel Oquendo and steady production from
Michael Bittinger, who recorded two hits and a run scored. WVSU pitching kept the game within reach, but Frostburg's two-run fourth and fifth innings proved to be the difference. Despite matching Frostburg with six hits, the Yellow Jackets were unable to deliver a late rally, stranding multiple runners and falling just short in the finale.
West Virginia State will look to bounce back next Saturday, March 28 at Salem.
