INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University Director of Athletics David Hicks has announced Ziyan Harris as the Head Cheer and Dance Coach, effective March 23, 2026.

Originally from Dallas, Texas, Harris earned a Bachelor of Arts in Visual & Performing Arts with a concentration in Dance from Grambling State University, where she was a member of the Grambling State Dance Team, the Orchesis Dance Company. As a member of the Orchesis Dance Company, she traveled and performed extensively with the Grambling State Marching Band at football games, basketball games, and other events,  representing Grambling State in the community and region. She is currently pursuing her MBA in Business Administration, combining her creative expertise with strategic leadership and organizational management.

"Ziyan brings tremendous experience and knowledge to our cheer program and the Jazzy Jackets," said Hicks. "Her background in cheer and dance at a prominent HBCU, specifically her knowledge of the stomp/shake style of our program, is an excellent fit for WVSU, and as a full-time staff member, she will elevate our program in every way, from numbers to visibility on campus and in the community."

At Grambling State, Ziyan held a leadership role with the Orchesis Dance Company as a student, assisting with choreography and teaching as a student leader.   In addition, she worked as an instructor at several dance studios and teams while performing at Grambling State.

"My goal for WVSU Cheer and the Jazzy Jackets is to elevate the visibility, technical strength, and competitive presence of both programs while fostering a culture of excellence, unity, and school pride," said Harris.  "My vision focuses on strong recruitment pipelines, community partnerships, and building a sustainable, high-impact spirit program that represents the university with distinction."

Prior to joining West Virginia State University, Harris served as the Cheer & Dance Coach at Bluefield State University, where she oversaw both cheer and dance operations, coordinated clinics and recruitment initiatives, and expanded community engagement efforts. Her leadership emphasized discipline, performance quality, academic accountability, and brand growth.
