State Softball splits Triangle Collegiate Classic in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. — West Virginia State softball went 2-2 in the Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic over the weekend, falling to Mansfield and Indiana of Pennsylvania, but topping Lincoln and Chowan.

Game 1 — Indiana (Pa.) 6, West Virginia State 2

West Virginia State scored twice in the fourth inning to pull within a run, but Indiana (Pa.) built an early cushion and held on for a 6–2 win in the opener of Friday's neutral-site matchup.
The Crimson Hawks struck first with a three-run second inning, highlighted by Jess Cekada's three-run home run to left. Indiana added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to extend the margin.
WVSU's response came in the top of the fourth. Kylie Price opened the inning with a single and Clarke Moore followed with a double to center to put runners in scoring position. Sydney Shamblin drove in the Yellow Jackets' first run with a single through the left side, then later scored on a hit-by-pitch RBI from Autumn Hall to make it 5–2.
Shamblin paced the offense with a 2-for-3 day, an RBI and a run scored. Moore went 1-for-3 with a double, and Price finished 1-for-3. Hall also added an RBI.

Game 2 — West Virginia State 9, Lincoln (Pa.) 1

West Virginia State broke open a close game with a four-run third inning and went on to defeat Lincoln (Pa.), 9–1, Saturday afternoon at the Triangle Softball Classic.
After being held scoreless through two innings, the Yellow Jackets erupted in the third. Kylie Price drew a walk to start the rally and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Olivia Bell to open the scoring. A misplayed ball in center allowed two more runs to cross, and Avery Contreras added an RBI groundout to push the lead to 4–0.
Lincoln answered with a run in the fourth, but Erica Sigmon responded in the top half of the fifth with a solo home run to extend the advantage. State added another run in the fifth before pulling away in the sixth, when Sigmon connected for her second home run of the game and Bell added a homer during a three-run frame to make it 9–1.
Sigmon led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance, two home runs and two RBIs. Bell went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Clarke Moore added two hits and scored twice.
In the circle, Hope Sizemore earned the win, allowing one run over five innings. Autumn Hall worked a scoreless sixth inning in relief.

Game 3 — West Virginia State 5, Chowan 1

West Virginia State wasted no time taking control, plating two runs in the top of the first. Kylie Price opened the game with a walk and later scored on a double play ball off the bat of Olivia Bell. Autumn Hall came home moments later on a wild pitch to make it 2–0.
The Yellow Jackets extended the lead in the second inning. Erica Sigmon drew a walk to set the table for Price, who delivered a two-run home run to deep left field to push the advantage to 4–0. Later in the frame, Hall tripled to right and scored on a sacrifice fly by Clarke Moore, giving State a 5–0 cushion.
Chowan (6–4) broke through in the bottom of the third. Ava Mizell doubled to center, moved to third on a single by Kyra Helton and scored on an infield single by Calliope James to cut the deficit to 5–1.
Murphy settled in from there. The senior right-hander scattered nine hits over seven innings, allowing just one earned run with no walks and three strikeouts on 91 pitches. She worked out of multiple scoring threats, stranding seven runners and inducing 13 ground-ball outs.
Offensively, Price finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Hall added two hits, including a triple, and scored twice. Avery Contreras also recorded two hits, while Moore drove in a run with her sacrifice fly.

West Virginia State was limited to four hits and managed just a fifth-inning run as Mansfield claimed a 3–1 decision Sunday morning in the finale of the Triangle Softball Classic.
After two scoreless innings, Mansfield broke through in the third. Kaelyn Watson singled and later scored on a two-run home run by Shannon Perlungher to give the Mountaineers a 2–0 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets answered in the fifth. With two outs, Sloan-Lebron connected for a solo home run to left to trim the deficit to 2–1. It marked State's lone extra-base hit of the contest.
Mansfield added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. A double down the left-field line by Emma Maurer set up an RBI sacrifice fly from Paige Reichard to push the lead to 3–1.
