Paulsen Powers Two-Run Walk-Off in Game 2 Against Caldwell

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Entering Saturday's doubleheader at Cal Bailey Field, West Virginia State was looking to build momentum after a 1-7 start, while Caldwell opened their season in Institute. By the end of the afternoon, the Yellow Jackets delivered back-to-back dramatic walk-off wins, rallying for a 6-5 victory in Game 1 and a 12-11 slugfest win in Game 2 to improve to 3-7 on the season.

In the opener, West Virginia State erased a late deficit and walked it off in the seventh inning. Brodie Guenther led the charge, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, including multiple doubles. Cameron Peschl added two hits and an RBI, while Garrett Wagoner drove in two runs. After Caldwell plated three in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, the Yellow Jackets chipped away with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Guenther doubled to spark the rally before WVSU capitalized on a Caldwell throwing error to bring home the winning run. Braylon Moore was strong in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to keep State within striking distance and set up the late comeback.

Game two turned into an offensive showcase, but once again it was the Yellow Jackets who had the final swing. After surrendering four runs in the second and three in the third, WVSU responded with power throughout the lineup. Guenther homered and drove in two, Ethan Spolarich added a two-run shot, and Aidan Paulsen delivered the decisive blow — a two-run walk-off homer to center in the bottom of the seventh to seal the 12-11 victory. Paulsen finished with four RBIs, while Angel Oquendo contributed two hits and two RBIs. Despite Caldwell briefly reclaiming the lead in the top of the seventh, West Virginia State answered immediately, capping a resilient afternoon with its second walk-off win of the day.

The Yellow Jackets and Cougars will play one 9-inning game tomorrow, March 1, at noon to complete the three game series.
