State Breaks Through in Game 2, Earns First Win Behind Price’s Grand Salami

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — West Virginia State University split a nonconference doubleheader with Tusculum University on Tuesday, dropping the opener 3–1 before erupting late for a 6–2 victory in Game 2 to secure the program's first win of the 2026 season.

Tusculum used a pair of middle-inning rallies to claim the first game of the twin bill.

The Yellow Jackets struck first in the second inning, pushing across a run to take an early 1–0 advantage. The lead was short-lived, as the Pioneers answered with a run in the third before adding two more in the fourth to move in front 3–1.

West Virginia State was limited to four hits in the contest and was unable to generate offense over the final five innings. Tusculum finished with six hits and played error-free defensively, while State committed one error in the field.

Game 2 flipped the momentum — and the bats came alive when it mattered most.

Tusculum again grabbed the early edge, scoring single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2–0 lead. The Yellow Jackets chipped away in the fifth, plating a run to cut the deficit to 2–1 and set the stage for a decisive sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, West Virginia State broke the game open. With the bases loaded, Kylie Price launched a grand slam to vault the Yellow Jackets in front, highlighting a five-run inning that turned a one-run deficit into a 6–2 advantage.

State finished with 10 hits in the nightcap and capitalized on three Tusculum errors. After allowing the two early runs, the Yellow Jacket pitching staff held the Pioneers scoreless across the final five innings to lock down the win.

WVSU travels to Glenville State on Friday for a pair of twinbills in the Glenville State Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21 in Gilmer County at the Sue Morris Sports Complex
