Yellow Jackets fall to Senators in PK shootout

INSTITUTE – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team lost their Mountain East Conference Quarterfinal match to Davis & Elkins College in a penalty kick shootout. Officially, the match is recorded as a 1-1 draw, with Davis & Elkins winning 3-1 in the shootout.

The Yellow Jackets created a pair of scoring chances in the opening 10 minutes, including a third-minute shot on goal from Rachel Okoro. In the 14th minute, the Senators converted off a free kick to take an early 1-0 lead. Sara París Filter put a shot on frame shortly after the restart that was saved by the Davis & Elkins goalkeeper. WVSU earned a corner kick in the 24th minute, which yielded a Leila Karam shot on goal that was also turned away. WVSU compiled five shots on frame in the opening period but went into halftime trailing 1-0.

Both sides generated shot opportunities in the opening two minutes of the second half without converting. WVSU then mounted an extended attack, forcing multiple saves from the Senators goalkeeper. Celina Seggelmann kept the margin at one in the 65th minute, stopping a shot on goal off a Davis & Elkins throw-in.

The Yellow Jackets' persistence paid off in the 78th minute when Cali Questel pounced on a loose ball in front of the net to level the score at 1-1. Kaylee Smith attempted a quick shot following the restart that sailed high left. That stood as the final scoring opportunity for either team in regulation, sending the match into overtime.

Neither squad logged a shot on goal in the first 10-minute overtime period, with WVSU missing high on two shot attempts. One minute into the second overtime, Seggelmann turned away a Senators shot on frame to keep the match tied. WVSU nearly found the game-winner in the 108th minute during a flurry in the box—hitting the crossbar once, forcing a save on another attempt, seeing a third blocked, and sending a fourth high left. The Yellow Jackets had one final chance in the closing minute that missed high, forcing a shootout to determine who advanced.

Davis & Elkins converted all three of its penalty kicks. Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz had WVSU's opening attempt saved, and París Filter hit the crossbar on the second. Sharon Freire Omonigho converted on the third attempt for WVSU, but following another Senators conversion, Karam had her attempt stopped, sealing the shootout for Davis & Elkins.
