Cali Questel scored her third goal of the season Wednesday night as the West Virginia State University women's soccer team battled UC to a 1-1 draw in the regular-season finale.
The Yellow Jackets applied pressure immediately, as
Leila Karam took a shot just 17 seconds into the match that was blocked to yield a WVSU corner kick. Minutes later,
Kaylee Smith put a shot on frame that was turned away by the UC goalkeeper.
In the 24th minute, WVSU generated another series of scoring chances, with
Rachel Okoro and
Madison Fortin both putting shots on goal that were saved. WVSU earned a free kick in the 39th minute, taken by
Sharon Freire Omonigho, who connected with Questel for the finish to give WVSU a 1-0 lead. That stood as the final scoring opportunity of the opening half, as neither team logged a shot in the final seven minutes.
UC controlled the pace early in the second half and found the equalizer in the 61st minute off a free kick to level the score at 1-1.
Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz responded with a shot on goal directly on the restart, but was unable to convert.
Scoring chances remained sparse over the final 30 minutes. UC took the match's final shot on goal in the 70th minute, which
Celina Seggelmann turned away. WVSU attempted two shots over the final 20 minutes, but neither hit the target as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
WVSU now turns its attention to the Mountain East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. Complete tournament information, including the Yellow Jackets' first-round opponent, will be announced by the MEC office.
