WVSU celebrates senior day with win over Shawnee State

INSTITUTE – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team capped off its senior day celebrations with a 3-0 victory over Shawnee State University Wednesday evening. Sara París Filter, Leila Karam, and Rachel Okoro each scored for the Yellow Jackets, who improve to 8-3-5 overall and 8-2-4 in Mountain East Conference play.

Mary Kahraman logged the match's first shot on goal in the third minute before París Filter found the back of the net just 30 seconds later to give WVSU an early 1-0 lead. Okoro recorded a shot on goal in the 11th minute that was turned away, but converted a chance shortly after in the 12th minute to extend the lead to 2-0.

WVSU finished with 11 shots on goal and four corner kicks. Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz registered a shot on goal in the 19th minute that yielded a WVSU corner kick. The Yellow Jackets maintained consistent pressure on the Shawnee State defense as Karam and Kahraman put shots on frame before WVSU earned back-to-back corner kicks. WVSU generated two additional shots on goal in the final five minutes of the opening period, both of which were saved.

WVSU resumed its offensive push immediately following halftime, with Okoro taking a shot on goal two minutes into the second half and putting a rebound attempt wide. The final goal arrived in the 58th minute when Kanon Tai set up Karam, who converted for her ninth goal of the season to put WVSU ahead 3-0.

The Yellow Jackets created seven more shots on goal in the second half while limiting Shawnee State to a single shot on goal for the match. The Bears' lone shot on goal came in the 64th minute and was turned away by Celina Seggelmann for her only save of the night. It marks the fourth time this season WVSU has held an opponent to just one shot on goal.

WVSU travels to face Glenville State University on Sunday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The Yellow Jackets close out the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 28, hosting UC.
