SALEM, W.Va. — West Virginia State men's basketball (4-8, 1-4 MEC) saw its four-game road stretch continue Wednesday night, falling 95–75 to Salem (6-6, D-II Independent) in a non-conference matchup inside T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 45–34 at halftime before Salem steadily extended its advantage in the second half, shooting 52.8 percent after the break and scoring 50 points over the final 20 minutes. WVSU remained within single digits early in the half but was unable to slow Salem's interior attack down the stretch.
Jaylen Subject led West Virginia State with 19 points and eight rebounds, while
Trey Harris added 18 points and seven boards.
Andrew Shull finished with 11 points and two assists, and
Hassan Belkhaddar contributed seven points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
West Virginia State shot 27-of-82 from the field and 7-of-33 from three-point range, adding 14-of-25 shooting at the foul line. The Yellow Jackets totaled 46 rebounds and forced 20 Salem turnovers, converting those into 20 points, but were outscored 52–30 in the paint and surrendered 50 second-half points.
Salem was paced by Zahki Fallen, who poured in 26 points, while Xavier Price and Eman Lawal added 17 and 16 points, respectively, as the Tigers shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the second half.
