INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State women's basketball battled throughout but couldn't overcome a late Frostburg State surge, falling 79–69 Saturday afternoon inside the Walker Convocation Center in Mountain East Conference play.
The Yellow Jackets trimmed the deficit to two possessions midway through the fourth quarter, but Frostburg State sealed the game at the foul line, converting 13 free throws in the final period to hold off WVSU's push.
Baylee Goins led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, knocking down four three-pointers and adding seven rebounds.
Tiir Nyok finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while
Latisha Parris added 10 points and four boards as WVSU placed three players in double figures.
West Virginia State shot 28-of-69 from the field (40.6 percent) and 8-of-25 from three-point range, but was limited to just eight free-throw attempts on the afternoon. Frostburg State controlled the glass by a 42–31 margin and leaned on interior scoring, finishing with 38 points in the paint.
Frostburg State was paced by Jenna Muha, who scored 23 points, while Julie Spinelli added 20 and Ayla Hileman chipped in 19 to give the Bobcats balanced scoring across the lineup.
West Virginia State returns to action Wednesday, January 7, traveling to face Salem in a non-conference matchup.
